Hollow Depths starts with a cave-in. Your mining expedition is cut off, your torches are running low, and something below is making a sound like distant stone grinding against stone. It's a strong opening, and for its first hour the map rarely lets go.
Darkness as a Mechanic
The map's cleverest idea is a torch budget. You start with six, and they burn out. Light reveals paths and keeps the creatures at bay, but every torch you place is one you don't have later. It turns every junction into a small decision, and it keeps you moving.
The custom ambience deserves special mention. Dripping water, faraway footsteps and a low hum that swells as you approach danger do more to build tension than any jump scare.
Puzzles
This is where Hollow Depths stumbles. The early lever puzzles are elegant, but the mid-game "echo chamber" requires you to guess a note sequence with very little feedback. We spent twenty minutes there, torches dwindling, and the dread quickly curdled into boredom.
The Final Act
Without spoiling it: the last section trades slow-burn atmosphere for a scripted chase with instant-fail states. It's technically impressive, but repeated deaths drain it of any fear. It's a shame, because the build-up is excellent.
Should You Play It?
If you're drawn to atmosphere and don't mind a few rough edges, yes — ideally with a friend and headphones. Just don't be surprised if you end up checking a walkthrough for the echo chamber.
最终评价
Hollow Depths is one of the most atmospheric maps on the Marketplace, and horror fans will find plenty to love. Uneven puzzles and a limp final act stop it short of greatness.
