Dragon Riders Add-On Review: Taming the Sky

Creature add-ons are the Marketplace's most crowded shelf, and most of them follow the same formula: a handful of new mobs, a spawn egg, maybe a saddle. Dragon Riders is different because it builds a progression around its dragons, and that progression slots neatly into survival play.

From Egg to Mount

Eggs spawn in new mountain structures and are guarded by an adult of the same species. Take one home, keep it warm near a campfire, and after a couple of in-game days it hatches into a hatchling that follows you around, fights small mobs and slowly bonds with you as you feed it.

It takes around three in-game weeks before your dragon is large enough to ride. That sounds long, but you'll barely notice — you're mining, building and exploring as normal, and your companion is growing alongside you.

Five Species, Five Playstyles

Each species has a different personality, too. Frostwings are skittish and will refuse to fly in thunderstorms; Embers get restless if you leave them in cold biomes.

Flight Feel

This is where Dragon Riders pulls ahead. Flight has weight: dragons bank into turns, lose altitude if you climb too steeply, and can dive for a burst of speed. It's intuitive with a controller and only slightly awkward on touch.

Balance

The only real concern is how dramatically a fully grown dragon changes the game. Long-distance travel stops being a consideration, and the Gilded dragon's ore sense makes strip-mining largely obsolete. Worlds that care about challenge may want to limit which species can spawn — thankfully, the add-on includes settings to do exactly that.
